In Dr. BAGUL'S Technique, minimum incision measuring 5 to 10 mm is taken contracted structure are released very skillfully to correct deformities. Sometimes small cut is taken in bone to straighten on bend bone. Some times tenodesis, tenoplication, teno-rerouting are performed as per requirements.Such multiples tiny operations are done in one setting. All procedures takes few minutes. Small incision do not need stitching, wound heals quickly with minimum scar and patient is back to work within few days. Indian surgeon has blindly adopted imported surgical technique which is not much suitable for conditions of developing countries. Kind of deformity, their social demand and their economical state is much different. Dr. BAGUL'S Surgery has originated in Indian Soil for poor, needy patients with old, untreated neglected deformity aimed at making them socially, economically independent.
In conventional surgery treatment, big incision is taken. During procedure lot of tissue dissection and bleeding is encountered. Some time blood transfusion may be required. Correction achieved in bone is held in place by stainless steel screw, plates or rods. Operation is usually time taking and requires around 30 minutes to 120 minutes. Patient is subjected to Anesthesia for long time. Wide spread dissection is associated with post operative, pain higher incidence of septic, long healing time, required costly antibiotic injections. Fibrosis caused by widespread dissection may lead to incomplete recovery and painful leg. Around 30% patients do not show noticeable improvement. Some patients might deteriorate. Hence this conventional surgery many times is in effective and out of reach of usual polio patients in Indian conditions. Imported surgical techniques is not suitable as per Indian patients and their needs.
Considering the difficulties during conventional surgery, Dr. Adinarayan Rao started modifying surgery, so as to make it simple, minimally invasive, quick and economical, which will correct many deformities in one stage only. It was indeed a challenge for Dr. Rao to finish hundred of operations of the patients with old neglected, severe deformities with his innovative techniques in disability surgery, it was then possible to operate hundreds of cases within few hours and with high success rates. He organised hundreds of the camps all over India and operated more than 3 lacks polio patients.
